What Innovation Means to Us at Vantage Plastics

Innovation is a word that gets thrown around a lot in business today. But at Vantage Plastics, it isn’t a buzzword or a vague ideal – it’s a tangible way of life. From our earliest days as a small Michigan thermoforming shop to our current status as a premier integrated and innovative plastic manufacturer, we have lived by a simple ethos: continuously form new solutions to tough problems. This commitment to innovation has guided our growth, our culture, and our vision for the future of plastics manufacturing.

Inside Vantage Plastics’ state-of-the-art facility, where advanced thermoforming machines and precision injection molding equipment operate in unison. Our factory floor exemplifies modern plastics manufacturing innovation, with automation and skilled teams working side by side to drive quality and efficiency.

A Legacy Built on Ingenuity and Growth

Innovation at Vantage Plastics is not a recent strategy – it’s in our DNA. Nearly 30 years ago, we started with just six employees and three machines in a 45,000-square-foot building. From these humble beginnings, Vantage Plastics “used innovation and ingenuity to grow steadily” into the 400+ employee, vertically integrated plastics processor we are today. In fact, our very first customer project exemplified what innovation means to us. When General Motors approached us for a twin-sheet thermoformed product that we didn’t yet have the exact machine to produce, our team didn’t turn them away – we retrofitted an existing machine on the fly to get the job done. That inventive, can-do approach to problem-solving – finding a creative solution under pressure – has defined our company culture ever since.

This early experience became a pillar of our mission, which we summarize as “Forming Solutions, Forming Better Lives, Forming Sustainable Futures.” Forming Solutions is much more than a tagline; it’s a pledge to always seek better ways to serve our customers’ needs through design and engineering creativity. Our mission explicitly “embodies a commitment to innovation and sustainability within the plastics industry”. In practical terms, that means every team member – from machine operators to engineers – is encouraged to approach challenges with ingenuity. We celebrate the kind of inventive thinking that turned a farm-boy work ethic into cutting-edge manufacturing success. To us, innovation means solving problems that others can’t, and doing so with agility, resourcefulness, and integrity.

Innovation as a Core Value and Culture

At Vantage Plastics, innovation isn’t confined to an R&D lab or a single department – it’s a core value that shapes our entire culture. We often say that “when you become part of the Vantage Plastics team, you are joining an innovative organization”. That ethos is reinforced by our values like being “Humbly Confident” and “Pursuing Opportunities That Drive Us Forward.” In practice, this means we remain confident in our expertise but always open to new ideas, continuous learning, and collaboration in search of even better methods. We don’t view innovation as change for its own sake; we view it as purposeful improvement. Every employee is empowered to contribute suggestions and insights – whether it’s a tweak to make a production line safer, a design optimization for a customer’s part, or a whole new process to reduce waste. This inclusive approach creates a forward-focused culture of innovation. Rather than resting on past achievements, Vantage Plastics is committed to continuously shaping the future of plastics manufacturing. Our legacy may be rooted in steady growth and reinvestment over decades, but our outlook is one of ongoing breakthroughs – an outlook that prizes adaptability and creativity as key ingredients for success.

So, what does innovation mean to our people? It means every day is an opportunity to do something better than yesterday. It means management encourages smart risk-taking and “out-of-the-box” thinking. It means celebrating inventive solutions – like when our maintenance team devises a clever fix to improve machine uptime, or our engineers incorporate a new material to solve a customer’s challenge. It’s no coincidence that many of our leaders and team members come from backgrounds that taught them ingenuity and resilience. As our co-founder George Aultman notes, growing up on a farm taught him the “inventiveness and can-do attitude” that he later ingrained into Vantage Plastics’ culture. We carry that spirit forward by making innovation everyone’s responsibility. This collaborative, all-hands mindset is how we ensure innovation isn’t just a slogan on the wall – it’s alive in the day-to-day actions of our team.

Integration, Technology, and Continuous Improvement

One way we live innovation is through integrated manufacturing solutions. Vantage Plastics has evolved into a one-stop plastics manufacturing partner, offering everything from design and tooling to thermoforming, injection molding, plastic extrusion, and recycling – all under one roof. This breadth of capability is intentional: by uniting multiple processes in-house, we can iterate faster, customize more deeply, and deliver end-to-end solutions that traditional single-process vendors cannot. Our niche from the beginning has been to be “the innovative and integrated plastics processor”, expanding capabilities to meet any customer need. Today that includes advanced extrusion lines (including a 120-inch wide sheet line for large projects), 18 heavy-gauge thermoforming machines (one of the largest in the world), and at least 11 injection molding machines integrated with our thermoforming operations. By embracing vertical integration, we ensure a seamless product journey from concept to completion – an approach that improves quality control, reduces costs, and speeds up delivery for our clients. In other words, innovation for us means breaking down silos in manufacturing. Our customers benefit by getting custom plastic manufacturing solutions that are holistic and optimized at every step.

We also harness cutting-edge technology and Industry 4.0 automation to drive innovation in our processes. We’ve invested heavily in modernizing how we operate – from implementing Rockwell’s Plex Smart Manufacturing Cloud and AI-driven quoting systems to deploying robotics on the production floor. For example, in 2024 we automated our estimating and quoting process with a new integrated application, dramatically speeding up response times and improving accuracy for customers. On the factory side, we continuously reinvest in robotics, sensor technology, and data analytics to enhance efficiency and quality. Our engineering team explicitly focuses on Industry 4.0 advancements as part of our design philosophy, recognizing that smart automation can amplify human skill rather than replace it. We like to say that robots aren’t replacing our workers – they’re empowering them to achieve more. By embracing automation and advanced manufacturing software, Vantage Plastics stays at the forefront of productivity and precision in the plastics industry.

Here are some of the key elements of innovation in our operations:

  • State-of-the-Art Manufacturing: We operate one of the industry’s most advanced facilities, including one of the world’s largest thermoforming presses and an array of high-tonnage injection molding machines. These capabilities allow us to take on ambitious projects and explore new techniques (for instance, running multiple tooling setups simultaneously on our huge thermoformer to compete with injection molding cycle times.). Advanced manufacturing equipment is the backbone of our innovation – enabling us to try what others might deem impossible.

  • Comprehensive In-House Services: Our integrated approach includes on-site design and engineering teams that collaborate directly with customers, in-house tooling fabrication, product testing labs, and full logistics support. This means we can iterate rapidly and maintain quality from design through delivery. An engineer can prototype a concept in CAD, have a tool milled, and run a test batch on our production line all within the same organization. That agility is a huge innovative advantage in plastics manufacturing.

  • Advanced Automation & Industry 4.0: We continuously adopt automation technologies – from collaborative robots for material handling to IoT sensors monitoring our equipment health. By leveraging data and automation, we improve consistency and free our skilled employees to focus on creative problem-solving. Our recent integration of a cloud-based smart manufacturing platform is a prime example: it has “revolutionized our quoting process” and centralized data, eliminating manual inefficiencies. Whether it’s using robotics in thermoforming and assembly or automating recycling processes, we see technology as an innovation multiplier.

  • Relentless Continuous Improvement: Integral to innovation is the idea that today’s best can become better tomorrow. We uphold stringent quality standards like ISO 9001 certification as a foundation, but we go beyond compliance by fostering a continuous improvement mindset. Small process tweaks that reduce a scrap rate, a suggestion from an operator that improves safety, or a cross-functional kaizen event to streamline workflow – these are everyday innovations. By measuring performance and empowering employees to implement improvements, we ensure innovation isn’t just about big leaps, but also constant incremental gains.

This integrated and tech-driven philosophy has solidified Vantage Plastics as a leader. As described in a recent press release, our “relentless dedication” to advancing capabilities has “solidified [us] as the premier integrated and innovative plastic manufacturer. ”In short, innovation means never settling – always looking for the next opportunity to enhance our capabilities and deliver value more efficiently. It’s how we stay ahead of the curve in plastics manufacturing and why clients trust us as their “trusted partner in innovative thermoforming and injection molding.”

Sustainable Solutions: Innovation for a Greener Future

Crucially, innovation at Vantage Plastics isn’t only about better products and processes – it’s also about better outcomes for our planet. We believe true innovation in the 21st-century plastics industry must align with sustainability. This belief drives us to develop eco-friendly materials, circular economy models, and waste-reducing technologies as part of our core business. In fact, our mission to form sustainable futures is directly tied to innovating in the realm of recycling and environmental stewardship.

One of our proudest innovations is the establishment of our Edge Materials Management division in 2016 – one of Michigan’s largest industrial recycling facilities. Through Edge, we pioneered a guaranteed buy-back program: “we will buy back any used plastic parts that we have produced and recycle them to be used again.” This closed-loop commitment means we take responsibility for our products throughout their lifecycle, ensuring they don’t end up in landfills. It’s a bold promise that required developing the capacity to reprocess large volumes of plastics. Today, Edge handles over 12 million pounds of plastic annually, converting manufacturing scrap and end-of-life products into reusable resin. We invested in state-of-the-art recycling equipment – shredders, grinders, wash and dry lines, and extrusion systems – to make this possible. By managing post-industrial and even post-consumer plastic waste, Edge Materials Management allows us and our partners to turn waste streams into valuable raw material. This is innovation in sustainability: building a circular economy approach where nothing goes to waste if we can help it.

We don’t stop at traditional recycling. Our dedicated innovation team in R&D constantly investigates new ways to incorporate difficult or novel materials into our plastics. For example, we’ve explored blending organic materials and bio-resins, and we added specialized equipment to recycle typically hard-to-recycle foam plastics like EPS (expanded polystyrene) and EPP (expanded polypropylene). There are very few facilities in the U.S. with the capability to reclaim and reuse EPS foam; the fact that we do this in-house is a testament to our forward-thinking approach. By developing these capabilities, Vantage Plastics is helping solve industry-wide challenges around plastic waste. One industry publication even noted that companies like Vantage and our sister company LOTIS are “setting the gold standard” for managing plastics waste by ensuring it gets “reprocessed into valuable new materials.” Every pound of material we recycle is a pound of virgin plastic we avoid needing, which conserves resources and cuts emissions.

Our pursuit of sustainable innovation also leads us to collaborate on unique projects that make a broader impact. A great example is our work with Tesla Energy: we partnered with them to create a returnable, reusable plastic packaging solution for their Powerwall home battery units, replacing what used to be single-use cardboard packaging. By designing a custom thermoformed and molded plastic crate that could be shipped multiple times, we helped Tesla dramatically reduce waste in their supply chain. Our CEO George Aultman calls this kind of project a “conversion” – replacing a commonly used material with plastics to achieve an improved outcome. In this case, the improved outcomes were both environmental (eliminating heaps of disposable packaging) and economic (a durable package that better protects the product and can be reused many times). We’ve also explored recycling ocean-bound plastics in partnership with organizations like the Ocean Legacy Foundation, looking for ways to turn recovered marine waste into new products. These initiatives show how innovation at Vantage Plastics serves a higher purpose: it’s not only about business growth, but also about contributing solutions to global sustainability challenges.

In recognition of our innovative product solutions, we’ve been honored by industry groups. At a recent Society of Plastics Engineers competition, our team earned two Gold Awards for unique designs that “revolutionize both the material handling and agricultural fields.” These award-winning projects – which included a patented VanStack column system for stacking plastic trays more efficiently, and advanced packaging for agricultural goods – underscore how we blend engineering innovation with practical impact. By increasing the load density of packaging and reducing material usage, we help customers save costs and shrink their carbon footprint. For us, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Whether it’s developing lightweight plastic components that improve fuel efficiency in automotive applications, formulating new recyclable materials like our proprietary VanTech durable resin blend, or optimizing a shipping container to be nestable and reusable, the end goal is the same: solve the problem in a smarter, greener way.

In essence, what innovation means to us in the sustainability context is responsible innovation. It’s not enough to create something new – it should also be better for our employees, our customers, and the world. We strive to ensure that each advancement in material or process is also a step toward a more sustainable plastics industry. As our Engineering & Design team puts it, “the vast majority of our products are designed to be recyclable, reusable, and returnable,” reflecting “our deep commitment to the circular economy and sustainable manufacturing.” By aligning inventive thinking with environmental consciousness, Vantage Plastics aims to lead by example in an industry undergoing a transformative shift toward sustainability.

Empowering People Through Innovative Thinking

Another often overlooked aspect of innovation is the human factor. At Vantage Plastics, we view our team and community as integral parts of our innovation story. A company can only be as innovative as its people are empowered to be. That’s why a key component of “Forming Better Lives” – a pillar of our mission – is investing in our workforce and sharing knowledge with the next generation. We encourage continuous training and skills development, so our employees are equipped to use new technologies and to grow into problem-solvers and leaders. Our vision for 2027 is to be the “premier employer with a highly engaged workforce through individual development, world-class safety, integration and process automation.” In practice, this means we are embedding innovation in how we train, how we work, and how we collaborate. For example, as we integrate more automation, we simultaneously provide opportunities for our team to upskill into more technically skilled positions – the goal is that automation handles the repetitive tasks, while people focus on creative and high-value work. In this way, innovation becomes a win-win, leading to less physical strain on workers and more fulfilling jobs, all while boosting productivity.

We also channel our innovative spirit into community initiatives. Each year, we host a large Manufacturing Day event, inviting hundreds of students to tour our facilities and get hands-on with technology. This event is designed to inspire young people by demonstrating the exciting, high-tech nature of modern manufacturing – it’s not the dark, dirty factory of the past, but a place of innovation, automation, and opportunity. By doing this, we hope to spark future innovators who will carry the industry forward. Additionally, we formed a nonprofit called The Well Outreach, which provides resources and services to our employees and local community, from childcare to financial education. While these may not sound like “innovation” in the traditional sense, to us they are important innovations in how a company supports its people. We are constantly asking: how can we do things better not just in products, but in our responsibilities to employees and neighbors? That holistic mindset has helped create a company culture where innovation thrives naturally – because people feel valued, safe, and motivated to contribute their ideas.

The Road Ahead: Shaping the Future of Plastics Manufacturing

As we look to the future, Vantage Plastics sees endless possibilities – a sentiment echoed by our leadership: “With an eye toward strategic development the future is almost unlimited,” thanks to “the region’s strong talent pool, the company’s innovative approach to providing solutions, and the opportunities to continue delivering sustainable products that have an impact on the world.” In other words, innovation is our roadmap forward. We’re proud of how far our relentless innovation has brought us – from a small thermoforming startup into a diversified manufacturer on the cutting edge of the industry – but we know we’re just getting started. Our expansion into a new 325,000 sq. ft. facility in Bay County, MI is transforming that site into “a dynamic center of innovation, collaboration, and progress,” complete with new injection molding lines and enhanced vertical integration capacity. These investments position us to explore new markets and develop next-generation plastic solutions. For example, we’re investigating advanced composites and bioplastics for future applications, experimenting with automation in logistics (like automated guided vehicles in our warehouse), and forging partnerships with universities to collaborate on research. By remaining agile and curious, we aim to stay at the forefront of trends that will define manufacturing in the coming decades, from AI-driven production optimization to new sustainable materials.

In conclusion, what does innovation mean to us at Vantage Plastics? It means everything. It is the engine that powers our company. It’s the assurance to our customers that we will never stop seeking better solutions for their needs. It’s the promise to our employees that their ideas matter and can become reality. It’s our responsibility to lead in making plastics more sustainable and efficient. Innovation is progress – the kind of progress you can measure not just in profit, but in reduced waste, improved lives, and stronger communities. We agree with business thinker Peter Drucker that “innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship,” the act that endows resources with a new capacity to create value. For us, that value is created every time we form a solution that didn’t exist before. From a retrofitted machine serving our first customer to the latest award-winning design from our engineering team, our history shows that when challenges arise, Vantage Plastics will invent, adapt, or reinvent to meet them. By staying true to our innovative spirit, we are confident that we will continue “pushing the boundaries of plastic manufacturing” and leading our industry toward a more creative, sustainable, and exciting future.

In an age when “innovation” can sometimes sound like a cliché, we strive to give it real meaning through our actions. At Vantage Plastics, innovation means always asking how we can do it better – and then rolling up our sleeves to make it happen. It means forming a better world through plastic solutions. And ultimately, it means never losing the entrepreneurial spark and curiosity that got us here. That is what drives us forward every day, and that is what innovation means to us.
