From being affectionately dubbed ‘Crush’ by his childhood friends to becoming our resident chaplain, Christopher Rusher brings a wealth of experience and compassion to Vantage Plastics. Crush, as he is still known, has just joined our team and will serve as our resident Chaplain. Crush was born in Pontiac and adopted as an infant. Crush is married to Heather, who is an award-winning teacher in special education, journalism, theatre, and dance. They have one son, Cayden, age 15, who plays football and participates in track, shotput, discus, and hammer throwing.

A Supportive Role

When asked what he can provide as a chaplain, Crush explains, “I am here to supply spiritual support throughout the organization. As a chaplain, I ask permission versus taking authority in my interactions with people. I am here to provide emotional support and counseling when needed. I am here to be an active listener, as there is a big difference between auditory hearing and real hearing. Pictured aboveL (3)Crush further explains, “I am here to provide motivation, conflict resolution, and mitigation if needed. I can provide financial counseling, literacy training, and a spectrum of life skills counseling. I am also here for crisis care, hospital visitations, and can conduct marriages, and funeral services if needed.” Crush is also available for Bible studies and discussions regarding faith. Crush may also be able to connect you with outside services related to housing, childcare, and other supporting resources.

These services are not just for employees but also for the spouses and children of our employees. Given Crush’s compassion, he will serve anyone who is moved to reach out to him. He can be contacted through the following email at crush@vantageplastics.com. Even if you just want to talk with someone, we encourage you and yours to reach out to Crush. Please take advantage of the services Crush can provide. Crush says, “Everything is built on relationships.”

A Journey of Faith and Service

Crush has a fascinating background rich in life experiences. Among other things, he has worked in sales, worked as a self-employed carpenter, been a teacher and administrator in public schools, done acting, performed in a traveling singing group, coached sports teams, served as a pastor in churches, and attended several universities. While he says he has always felt a calling to ministry, it crystalized while he was attending Central Michigan University and participating in a group called The New Life Singers. He was led to a deeper exploration of his calling by Ed McCallum, the professor and leader of the singing group. Under Ed’s direction, Crush was asked to preach at a prison. Crush describes what happened as “an out-of-body experience. I felt as if the hand of God was on me.”

Athletic Accomplishments

Perhaps one of the most defining aspects of Crush’s life is that of sports. Not only did he participate in several college sporting events, but he went on to participate in professional sports. He earned too many top honors throughout college and his professional career to provide a complete listing. However, some of his achievements include the Michigan Powerlifting Champion and North American powerlifting champion, two-time MAC all-conference shotput and discuss recognition, and MAC Shot-put champion. Given his affinity for Scottish tradition, Crush became a professional athlete in the Highland games. During his professional career, he had the great blessing of traveling to many countries for competitions. Among his many accomplishments as an athlete, he had a top ten world ranking from 1994-2000. He was the World Sheaf Toss Champion and world record holder in the 25lb. sheaf toss from 1994-2005. He maintains a connection to professional sports as he co-founded G-Force Strength, through which he works with world-class athletes on spiritual health and weight training.

Community Involvement

Along with his wife, they founded Heathersleigh Dog Rescue. While they provide rescue services for all breeds, they specialize in Bernese Mountain Dog rescue.  Many of these are rescued from Amish breeders who cannot keep the puppies after they are born. Crush and his wife have had up to 12 foster dogs at their home while awaiting people to adopt them. They also provide dog therapy at nursing homes and hospitals.
